Mulled Wine


1 bottle red wine
1 lemon, sliced
1 orange, sliced
1 nutmeg, cracked or 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
4 cloves
a 3-inch piece of cinnamon
sugar to taste (optional)

Cooking Instructions

Combine the first six ingredients in a medium saucepan and turn the heat to medium-low. Cook, stirring occasionally, until hot to the touch but not boiling. Add sugar if desired and stir to dissolve.

Strain out the solids and serve in heatproof mugs or glasses garnished with fresh orange slices.

Makes 4 to 6 servings
